The European Economy in the Time of COVID-19: Towards a New Dawn?

The University of Strasbourg, the BETA research laboratory and ERMEES research team are delighted to announce a one-day macroeconomics workshop to be held on Friday December 3, 2021 in Strasbourg.

The COVID-19 pandemic is unprecedented in recent history, the ensuing economic crisis has plunged the world economy into disarray and put the European economy to the test. Despite the suffering and the loss of many lives, this crisis is an opportunity to rethink certain aspects of the European project. In the emergency, unprecedented measures have been put in place, such as lockdowns, generalized teleworking, government-guaranteed loans to companies, etc. In this historical context, the workshop will aim at studying the challenges and perspectives related to a number of issues including monetary and budgetary policies, the coordination of health policies, and the most appropriate response to environmental and social issues in order to propose new ideas to strengthen the European project.

Researchers are invited to submit analytical, empirical and theoretical papers that are broadly consistent with the workshop topic. However, in particular we welcome papers related to the following areas: 

  • Fiscal policy, debt sustainability after the lockdown policies.
  • Economic consequences of climate change and pandemics.
  • Economic and political asymmetries in the EU.
  • Health policy and European coordination.
  • Corporate debt and the rise of zombie firms.
  • Conventional and non-conventional monetary policies.
  • Efficacy of support strategies during the lockdowns.
  • Structural heterogeneity between EU member states.
  • Transmission channels of economic policy and policy mix.
  • Monetary policy in an incomplete monetary union.
  • Banking system, financial integration, financial stability.
  • Public finance and fiscal federalism.
  • Fiscal rules and EMU budget.
  • Labor markets, labor mutations, migrations, poverty and inequality.
  • Economic convergence, economic stagnation and ecological transition.
  • Internal and external imbalances, external debt sustainability, exchange rates.
  • Gender inequality and social protection.

The workshop is open to both young and experienced researchers, Ph.D. students, post-doctoral researchers, and professionals from business, government and non-governmental institutions.

Participants are expected to prepare a brief discussion on another paper within the session. All presentations and discussions will be in English.

Submission Procedure

Full papers should be submitted by email to ermees@unistra.fr. The submission should mention the following details: title of communication, name(s) of the author(s), affiliation of the author(s), e-mail address of the corresponding author, postal address, telephone number. 

Important dates

  • Mid-March, diffusion of the call for papers.
  • Before May 16, 2021: Authors are invited to send their contributions before the deadline. 
  • By June 18, 2021: Authors will be informed of the decision of the scientific committee. 
  • By June 25, 2021: Authors have to confirm their participation.
  • By October 19, 2021: Authors have to send the final version of the paper.
  • On December 3, 2021: Day of the fourth ERMEES Macroeconomics Workshop.

Publication opportunities

A selection of papers presented at the conference will be considered for publication in International Economics (Click here). Interested authors have to choose “VSI: European Economy” when they submit to International Economics if they want to be included in our special issue after a standard refereeing process.

Registration fees

There will be no registration fees for presenters. For other participants, fees amount to 50 euros.

Conference venue

The workshop will be held in the European Doctoral College, 46 Boulevard de la Victoire, 67000 Strasbourg, France. This link explains how to get to the College. Due to the uncertainty of the health situation, the conference could be held online.

Accomodation

Rooms were “set aside” for the workshop participants at the Citadines. You must indicate to the Citadines reception that your accommodation is for the ERMEES conference. Please note that the deadline for reservations is November 2nd.
